Characterizing surface-gap effects on boundary-layer transition dominated by Tollmien–Schlichting instability

چکیده

Effects of gaps (rectangular surface cavities) on boundary-layer transition are investigated using a combination linear stability theory and experiments, for boundary layers where the smooth-surface results from Tollmien–Schlichting (TS) instability. Results presented wide range gap characteristics, with associated locations ranging location all way forward to location. The movement is well described by variable $N$ -factor, which links characteristics level instability amplification $e^N$ leading transition. effects TS-wave characterized two limiting behaviours. For shallow $d/w < 0.017$ , reduction in -factor function depth $d$ independent width $w$ . deep > 0.028$ depth. When both sufficiently large relative displacement thickness $\delta ^*$ bypassed, resulting at These behaviours mapped out terms ( $w/ \delta $d/ ), providing predictive model

Effects of long-wavelength Klebanoff modes on boundary-layer instability

It is known that low-frequency components of three-dimensional vortical disturbances in the free stream can be entrained into the boundary layer due to the nonparallel flow effect, producing significant distortion in the form of alternate thickening and thinning of the layer in the spanwise direction. This observation goes back to Dryden (1936) and Taylor (1939) who, in fact, suggested that the...

Real-Gas and Surface-Ablation Effects on Hypersonic Boundary-Layer Instability over a Blunt Cone

There has been little research into surface-ablation effects on hypersonic boundary-layer instability, and the current understanding of real-gas effects on hypersonic boundary-layer instability still contains uncertainties. The objective of the current work was to analyze the hypersonic boundary-layer transition process using linear-stability theory, inwhich surface ablation, aswell as real-gas...

Role of shear layer instability in the transition of boundary layer on a bluff body

The boundary layer on a circular cylinder undergoes a transition to turbulence at, approximately, Re=2 x 105. This is accompanied with a significant reduction in drag. Using a stabilized finite element formulation, we have conducted two-dimensional computations for flow past a cylinder using a very fine mesh close to it. It has been shown by researchers earlier that the genesis and formation of...

Compressibility Effects on Roughness-induced Boundary Layer Transition

Direct numerical simulation is used to investigate the effect of compressibility on roughness-induced boundary layer transition. Computations are performed in both the lowand the high-speed regime (at free-stream Mach number Me = 2) for an isolated three-dimensional element with cubic shape and for two-dimensional roughness strips. For each configuration two values of the roughness height Reyno...

Effects of surface wave breaking on the oceanic boundary layer

[1] Existing laboratory studies suggest that surface wave breaking may exert a significant impact on the formation and evolution of oceanic surface boundary layer, which plays an important role in the ocean‐atmosphere coupled system. However, present climate models either neglect the effects of wave breaking or treat them implicitly through some crude parameterization. Here we use a one‐dimensi...
